WordPress 4.5 Is Released – Make Sure Your Site Is Updated
WordPress 4.5 is just out and it’s time to make sure your website is updated. As with all WordPress releases it’s named after a famous jazz musician and 4.5 has the honour of being named ‘Coleman’ after jazz saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. A host of new features we’re introduced but below is a quick run down on the top 5 to take advantage of now.
1.Live Responsive Previews now available in the Customiser
From within the WordPress 4.5 Customiser you can check out how a particular change looks across a desktop, tablet or phone prior to saving it. Previously you had to save these changes and use other tools outside of WordPress – a real pain.
2.Custom logo’s can now be added
From within the customiser you can add a custom logo for your site. Previously you had only been able to do this if your theme supported it.
3.Improvements in the WordPress visual editor
A number of improvements have been made to the editor for posts and pages; to help improve workflow and streamline the content production process.
- Inline Links can now be created without the distraction of a dialog box. The dialog box is till there but doesn’t appear automatically, providing less distraction to the content you’re writing.
- Further Formatting Shortcuts – Control+K – brings up the improved inline links box as above, other shortcuts included -`code` for code and **bold** for bold.
4.Smart Image Resizing
Building on the image improvements made in 4.4, now generated images load 50% faster, which is great news.
5.Users can now login with email addresses
Previously you could only login to WordPress with your username but now you can login with your email addresses as each user has a unique email address associated with their account.
Developer Improvements
There are a number of ‘under the hood’ developer changes that are detailed on the WordPress release page.
All in all an excellent WordPress 4.5 release – well done to all the 298 key contributors and Mike Schroder.
If you’ve not been updated yet then reach out to your web site provider with a gentle reminder.
